Description

The Bruce Mennella Vietnam War Collection relates to the 1968-1972 military service of Mennella, an Air Intelligence Officer in Naval Fighter Squadron 114 (VF-114), nicknamed "Aardvark Squadron." The collection is comprised primarily of photographic materials, including seventy-seven (77) aerial reconnaissance photographs of Vietnam and Laos, circa 1971-1972; one hundred forty-nine (149) photographs taken or collected by Mennella and his squadron mates during their military service, circa 1968-1972; and twenty-six (26) photographs of the Blue Angels performing at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show, circa 1970-1971. The photos depict military life, operations, personnel, and aircraft. Locations include Vietnam, Laos, Japan, and Hong Kong.

The collection also contains a small amount of ephemera, such as a decal for the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School and pages from a Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper, May 9, 1972. Also included is a 48-page booklet titled “Summer of ‘71” that contains inside jokes and comics related to a Vietnam-era combat tour.
